Kids Really Do Say the Darnedest Things. What’s the Worst Yours Have Said? – Survey of the Day
A Denver 6-year-old is getting national attention for repeating lyrics of a pop song to a fellow classmate. D’Avonte Meadows, a first grader, is accused of sexual harassment and was suspended for three days after singing the lyrics of LMFAO’s smash hit “Sexy and I Know It” to a 6-year-old female classmate. Now, if this is as big of a deal as people are making it, I am thinking I am in trouble because my 3-year-old daughter already leaves me speechless with the things she says at times.
Not only was this song one of the hottest and most played of the last year, but it was also featured on an M&M commercial. If you put catchy things in front of a 6-year-old they will begin to repeat them, guaranteed.
According to the school, this was the third time D’Avonte Meadows harassed the girl. “A student would not be suspended for merely singing a song. If actions warrant we would consider suspending a student to emphasize the seriousness of the actions and to prevent further inappropriate behavior toward another student.” Said Aurora Public Schools.
OK, so if the kid was a repeat offender, maybe this whole kicking him out of school thing was warranted, but it’s not really clear what went on in this case. All I know is if we are really going to start suspending kids for the things they say between the ages of 5 and 12, I am in for a lot sick days spent at home with my 3-year-old.
Her latest thing to say is, really? “Dad, are you REALLY watching sports again?” “Did you REALLY just do that, REALLY? She has also repeated song lyrics that I didn’t even understand while listening to the song, she repeats her mother’s sometimes sailor-like mouth, and recently told me “she laughs her a$* of when her brother gets hurt.”
Do these things make her a bad person or me a bad parent? I don’t think so. I correct her, and discipline her when she does something wrong, but it’s not entirely her or my fault. I blame it on the way society is today. Sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll is everywhere, and ids are exposed to it. They are a lot like parrots, and they are going to repeat what they hear, and sometimes even put their own little spin on it. Correct them, yes. Suspend them from school for singing “I’m Sexy and I Know It,” come on now!
