Butch Celebrates the One Year Anniversary of ‘Lures 4 Laney’

Laney

I have been in radio for 6 years now, some would call me a young pup, but in that short amount of time I have gotten to meet and experience a ton of cool things. There is one thing that stands way above the rest as the most important to me and what I am most proud of… An event I put on one year ago today called “Lures 4 Laney.”

The story of the event goes all the way back to 2010 when a once healthy, active, and loving three-year-old girl from Windsor, Delaney (Laney) Wadsworth, was diaganosed with an inoperable, cancerous, brain tumor called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Delaney’s love for life at such a young age brought much attention from me and other media to her situation. Laney passed away just days before her 4th birthday in March of 2011, breaking many hearts including mine. Having a daughter only a touch younger than Delaney, I couldn’t sleep at night, I had nightmares, and I knew I there was a calling for me to do something.

I always knew I wanted to be on the radio, and I also knew that when I made it I would use my voice to help others. I knew I had the opportunity to take a horribly unimaginable situation, bring light to it for many years to come, help fight to end the horrible disease, and keep Delaney’s legacy alive for as long as I had a voice.

After deciding this cause meant a lot to me, I had to figure out what to do to raise awareness and money. After talking with Laney’s parents, Jason and Brenna, I found out she loved to go fishing. A fishing derby was a great idea! Water Valley in Windsor was on board right away, and agreed to host the event on their South Lake Island. The radio stations where I work also agreed to be a part of the event, and Lures 4 Laney was born.

I spent countless hours planning the event with the help of so many great people, had wonderful sponsors who made the event financially possible, and then on July 15th, 2012, I was joined by a ton of great people in Windsor to help raise funds and put the event on. After paying for everything, we wrote a check to Children’s Hospital Colorado for $9,000 to help them with pediatric cancer research. The event would go on to become the Community Event of the Year at the Colorado Broadcaster’s Awards in March.

That day on stage in front of Laney’s parents, my closest friends, family, and others who were touched by the cause I promised that as long as I had a voice I would make sure that Laney was never forgotten, and that we would help those battling similar situations by continuing to raise funds each year.

That promise wasn’t a joke… I meant every bit of it. And although lives change, I have a new radio station, and sometimes life can throw you a curve ball, as I have had some of the toughest times in my personal life, I am sticking to the promise.

Originally the event was going to be changed to a benefit concert, and we had big-time rockers P.O.D. almost booked for the event, but some things fell through the cracks and I was again without an event. That is when I was ready to throw in the towel, blame my personal struggles and cancel the event for this year. But I got to thinking about that little promise I made that day…

It may be a smaller scale for this year, but I am having an event in honor of Delaney, and I am going to raise funds for people in similar situations. On September 20th I am going to sit somewhere (still to be determined where) the whole entire day, broadcast on the radio, ask Northern Colorado to donate to a very special cause, have bands come play, have rock stars call in, and end the night with a show by the most talented guy I know, my good friend and intern, Romero. There will be more details on the event in the coming days and weeks, but please plan to be a part of it.

This may not win a any awards, it may not be the extravagant event that Lures 4 Laney was last July, but it is my best effort to keep a promise that I intend to carry through.

If you have a band or musician who wants to be a part of the event, or have something to donate to the cause for giveaways, please contact me.

Thank you so much for believing in this cause as much as I do.

Here is a video I did around the one year anniversary of Delaney’s passing that will give you more insight on her story…
